Summer is short and we have tried to take every advantage of chances to get away. Cama Beach State Park has a few dozen cabins that you have to reserve 18months in advance. They are right on the beach and no cars are allowed down near the cabins.
The nearby Center for Wooden Boats rents old wooden row boats and people take them out for joy rides or to trap crabs. Whidbey Island is not far across Saratoga Passage and there is a constant stream of pleasure boats. The beach is pebbly but good for strolling. The forests are dark and misty and full of huckleberries and blackberries. Without a summit to hike to, the berries are the highlight of hiking there. Camano Island is an island but there is a bridge to get there. People live there and work on the mainland. Or they live there and make art. Or they retire there. Or they run small beef cattle ranches. It’s a funky little island, maybe 25 miles from end to end and 5 miles across and not too far from home to reach by bike if that is your thing.

Excellent place to retire?? How do I get there! It sounds very peaceful. Love, me
